Sad news today that Burry Stander, the former World Under 23 Mountain Bike World Champion has reportedly been killed in a cycling accident.

Details are still sketchy, but it appears that Stander was hit by a taxi while on a training ride near Shelly Beach in South Africa.

There has been widespread shock at the news as well as an outpouring of condolences for Stander’s family and friends.

There has also been anger and disbelief at this tragic news.

Eye Witness News reports the editor of Bicycling SA, Mike Fitch as saying: “I think he is one of those first South Africans that has proved to the rest of South Africa that you can be the best in the world.

“This is why it is such a sad day, because he has not only been a great cyclist, but a great ambassador for the sport around the world and around South Africa.

The news is especially saddening given Stander had only recently married his wife, road cyclist Cherise Stander, in May 2012.
