Sweltering conditions could not stop 21 year old Aaron Donnelly from beating the hot favourites in Stage 1 of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour.

Donnelly (Huon Salmon-Genesys Wealth Advisers) out sprinted Calvin Watson (Jayco-VIS) and New Zealand’s Josh Atkins (Grays Online NZ National Team) for the victory on a stage so heat affected that organisers were forced to bring the start time forward two hours to avoid the hottest part of the day.

Donnelly led the break over the line and put two plus minutes into the other serious contenders for the title, including Simon Gerrans and Stuart O’Grady (both Jayco Australian National Team).

An emotional Donnelly told the media after his win: ‘It’s my first win in a long time.  I’ve had a lot of misfortune the last couple of years, a lot of broken bones,’ a reference to the broken arm he sustained when he fell down stairs at the Australian Institute of Sport’s training base in Italy in April 2012.

“It wasn’t the best three years for me but I’m glad I’ve come out strong from it,” Donnelly said.

Defending champion Nathan Haas (Jayco Australian National Team) finished 11 mins 35 seconds behind Donnelly and has lost any chance of defending his title. He’ll now ride to support Gerrans and O’Grady in the final two stages.
