Alessandro Ballan is recovering well following a crash during a training camp in Spain on 20 December. He has issued several tweets in recent days indicating that he is on the mend.

Ballan suffered a broken femur, a broken rib and an injured spleen in the accident (so dangerous was the injured spleen that doctors had to remove it soon after he arrived at the hospital in Parcent, Spain).

In a media statement on BMC Racing’s website, doctors treating Ballan said there had been no complications following any of the surgeries. He had been moved out of intensive care, but there was no timetable on his possible release from hospital.

Ballan was due to race the World Tour season opener, the Tour Down Under, beginning on 20 January. He has been replaced by Ivan Santaromita.
